As the tropical storm Melissa approached Jamaica, there were many different contexts that the Lord laid on my heart to share. In this time of disaster, we can understand that most times we can be unprepared for the natural disaster that may come, even though we are prepared. We serve a God who plays a significant role in creation and in the different activities that happen in our lives. Though people may behave from a place of independence and have their lives in control, they will fail to see that this is not God’s ideal for creation and for how we should live on this earth. God created us in a way to depend on Him, whether we face a storm or not. As Hurricane Melissa approached Jamaica, we saw people spend plenty of their time and resources preparing for a storm.

The roads are crammed with cars and people, while the supermarkets' shelves are empty. Projects are instantly being initiated to clean drains to prevent flooding, and using plywood to protect windows and prevent water from entering their homes. They have more effort and interest in protecting their physical assets and themselves. When I saw all of this, I was amazed, but it would have been even more wonderful if men took this time and effort to prepare for God; then what a great blessing it would be in Jamaica. People spend more money and time in the supermarkets and other places, while the churches are empty.

The homes are filled with food and all other resources for the storm, but there is a lack of God and his love in the hearts of the people. In the book, 2 Timothy chapter 3 made it clear that in these last days, perilous times shall come, and men shall be lovers of themselves rather than lovers of God. Before the storm, everything was good; people did whatever they wanted and chose whomever they served. Thankfully, we serve a gracious God. He is compassionate and long-suffering, patiently waiting for man to depend upon Him. According to the book titled Formation for Christian Ministry, “Dependence is a basic response to the grace of God. It acknowledges that there are no self-made men and women, that we are all dependent on God for life, breath, personality, and selfhood. Dependence may indeed make us more godly in the sense of being conformed to the image of Christ, depending on him for spiritual sustenance.”

In the Bible, we see that God normally sends his prophets to warn nations through his prophets before he sends destruction (2 Kings 17:12, 2 Chron. 33:10, Luke 3:18). Before the Lord sends destruction, He sends instructions. Most times, people ignore these instructions and choose to live life as they please. Noah preached the gospel to antediluvians for 120 years. They ignored him, they mocked him, and they did evil continually in the sight of the Lord (Genesis 6, 7, 8). To this day, it is one of the most powerful stories when it comes to obedience because Noah followed the commands of God. His obedience caused him and his family to be saved from the flood for 40 days and 40 nights.

The history shows the facts of the choices we make, but still, we fail time after time to understand the importance of warnings and following God’s instructions. People trust the meteorologist more than the Bible. It’s only through a natural disaster that the people of Jamaica will pray to God. God got the people of the nation's attention through a Category 5 hurricane. This is somehow great to know that the nation prays unto God before destruction, but mostly sad because they only know God when they realize that a disaster spoils their progress and productivity, and only leaves them hopeless and unable to function in their regular capacity. God is saying through a hurricane, Finally, I got their attention. People watch the weather news more than they read the scriptures and listen to a truthful preacher. We spend our time being fearful of the things God says, 'Fear not,' and we invest our time and efforts in things that just need prayer, a righteous lifestyle, and obedience.

For three and a half days, man was allowed to pray and also to seek God. It was a time to experience His wrath and judgment, but also to see that He only requires of us to surrender and follow Him and reject the pleasures of the world. However, for most, this was not the direction they took. After the hurricane, many saw it as a time to have fun, to continue in their evil ways, and probably see it as a holiday because no one got called in for work.

Evil not just continued, but it got worse, as all the secular spots opened up (bars & lounges) to meet the needs of Satan’s possessed people, women threw their dignity to men as they sought to fill the lonely gaps in their lives through sexual pleasures, and people became more bitter and gruesome toward each other. The air is polluted with stenches from saturated water and dead animals, with no trees to eliminate and bring coolness to the chaos caused by Melissa. Commerce has come to a halt in the Western parishes of Jamaica, as they figure out what direction to take from here. As earth history comes to a close, disaster will increase, deception will be prominent, and evil will be at every doorstep. Thankfully, God brings hope. Jesus is the hope of this broken world. If hope existed before, it can exist again.

with the word of God, men can be the difference that this world needs.

Be apart of this wonderful experience as we live the truth from the word of God to become better men for our families but most importantly for God.
